Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (suan zao ren, 酸枣仁) refers to the dry, ripe seed of deciduous shrub of the deciduous shrub Ziziphys jujuba, which belongs to the family Rhamnaceae. This shrub has thorny branches that grow to 5 – 10m tall. Native to many parts of Asia, Ziziphys jujuba grows its fruits in hot summers and with sufficient water.
